A shortened form of Jehonadab. 1 The son of Shimeah (Shimea), David’s brother, and cousin of Amnon, David’s son. He gave Amnon the plan that led to Amnon’s rape of Tamar, his half sister (2Sam 13:3-5). It is possible that he is the same nephew of David elsewhere called Jonathan (2Sam 21:21; 1Chr 20:7). 2 The son of Rechab, the founder of the Rechabites, a strict religious sect characterized by adherence to traditions, abstinence from wine, and a nomadic lifestyle. The religious zeal characteristic of the group is perhaps reflected in Jonadab’s (here Jehonadab’s) accompaniment of Jehu in his chariot as he killed those loyal to the apostate Ahab (2Kgs 10:15-17) and then attempted to exterminate the worshipers of Baal (2Kgs 10:18-25).
