One of the two wives of Jacob. Little is known of her personally other than the fact that she was “weak-eyed” or, possibly, “tender” (Gen 29:17; the meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain). She was clearly less favored than her beautiful sister and co-wife, Rachel. Leah bore Jacob’s first four children, Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah (Gen 29:31-35) and, later, two more sons, Issachar and Zebulun, and a daughter, Dinah. In (Ruth 4:11) Leah and Rachel are mentioned together as matriarchs of Israel.
