1 An ancient city and religious center in northern Egypt near modern Cairo. In the Bible, Joseph married an Egyptian girl named Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On (possibly the high priest there). According to the LXX, On (Heliopolis) was one of the cities in Egypt built by the Israelites (Exod 1:11). (Isa 19:18 may contain a reference to On in its prediction that the “City of the Sun” (according to some Hebrew manuscripts) will be one of the five cities in Egypt where Hebrew-speaking worshipers of Yahweh will dwell. In his oracle concerning Egypt, Jeremiah predicts that Nebuchadnezzar will destroy the temples of Egypt and will demolish the “pillars” (i.e., obelisks) of the “Temple of the Sun,” probably referring to the Temple of Re in On (Jer 43:13). Ezekiel predicts that judgment will befall the city of On and that the inhabitants will be taken into captivity (Ezek 30:17). 2 The son of Peleth, a leader of the tribe of Reuben who joined the rebellion of Korah against Moses in the wilderness (Num 16:1).
