Perez (Pee´riz; Heb., “a breach”)

A son of Judah and Tamar; his twin brother was Zerah (Gen 38:29). From him descended the Perezite branch of the Judah tribe (Num 26:20; 1Chr 2:4-5). David was a Perezite and brought prestige to the group (Ruth 4:12; Ruth 4:18-19), and through this line Perez was an ancestor of Jesus (Matt 1:3).

Gen 38:29

29But just then he drew back his hand, and out came his brother; and she said, “What a breach you have made for yourself!” Therefore he was named Perez.

Num 26:20

20The descendants of Judah by their clans were: of Shelah, the clan of the Shelanites; of Perez, the clan of the Perezites; of Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites.

1Chr 2:4-5

4His daughter-in-law Tamar also bore him Perez and Zerah. Judah had five sons in all.5The sons of Perez: Hezron and Hamul.

Ruth 4:12

12and, through the children that the Lord will give you by this young woman, may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah.”

Ruth 4:18-19

18Now these are the descendants of Perez: Perez became the father of Hezron,19Hezron of Ram, Ram of Amminadab,

Matt 1:3

3and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Aram,
