praetor (Pree´tuhr)

A senior Roman magistrate of senatorial rank. Praetors served as judges; commanders in the army; managers of the senate treasury; supervisors of roads, grain distribution, or public works; or governors of provinces. Jesus was scourged in the praetor’s residence (“praetorium”) by Roman soldiers (Mark 15:16-20).
