Plain of, a district of Babylonia in southern Iraq. According to (Gen 10:10), the Plain of Shinar included Babel (Babylon), Erech (Warka), and Accad in central Mesopotamia close to Baghdad. The Tower of Babel is said to have been built in “a plain in the land of Shinar” (Gen 11:2). “Amraphel king of Shinar” was one of the four kings who was pursued and defeated by Abraham (Gen 14:1-16). In later times “Shinar” was equated with Babylon, from which the exiles would one day be rescued (Dan 1:2; Isa 11:11).
