Here Tamar stands in the foreground, waiting for her father-in-law. Although her face is covered, she is the protagonist in this scene. Judah plays the antagonist approaching from the back.
When Chagall returned to Paris after WWI he was asked by a Parisian art dealer and publisher to do the illustrations for a new Bible. By 1939, at the beginning of World War II, he had finished 66 plates out of the 105 plates. However, the publisher Vollard died that same year and soon after Chagall and his family fled France for the safety of New York. He completed the series of illustrations for the Bible in 1956.
