A Semitic language closely related to Hebrew. Several passages in the OT are written in Aramaic (Ezra 4:8-6:18; Ezra 7:12-26; Dan 2:4-7:28; Jer 10:10-11; Gen 31:47). Jesus probably spoke a dialect of Western Aramaic and some words in the NT come from Aramaic, e.g., “Talitha cum,” “Maranatha,” and “Golgotha.”
